1Co 6:19-20 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
The Corinthian believers are among the liberals, sensual or carnal believers during Paul’s time. Let us consider what the root of the problem is. You can observe how Paul uses the expression “know ye not” five times (vv.3, 9, 15, 16 & 19) and “do ye not know” once (v.2). Paul is telling us that we have something to know like the Corinthians, because we cannot do one thing unless we know first what to do, or why we have to do it and how to do. I will try to concentrate on three things to make this simple and not too complicated.
If you are a believer, or saying that you are of God, you have to know these three things.
1Co 6:15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them members of a harlot? God forbid.
Your Body is a Member of Christ:
1Co 12:12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
1Co 12:27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.
The Lord through Paul illustrated unto us the union of two things that becomes one body. Using a person uniting with a harlot/prostitute, if one is joined to her (it speaks of intimacy as in marriage), then he is one body with her. They are one. But we as believers are washed, sanctified and justified (v.11). We have different union or joining, and it is unto the Lord. When you believed the gospel you are entering into a relationship or union with Him (1 Co.6:17), you are reconciled to God (Rm.5:10) and you became member or part of His body, the body of Christ which refers to all believers wherever they are in this earth.
Here we have to realize that we are not to confine our membership in any local gatherings, organization or denominations. We can be identified with them ,but on strictness on membership we are members of Christ. In fact your name is written in heaven in God’s book of Life (Lk.10:20;Php.4:3) and not on ‘Membership Roll’ of any organizations. We do not have to be so ‘die-hard’ on earthly membership because we know we are members of Him. But many groups even equals it to salvation. Some even compromise unto yoking with those unbelievers. Some are so die-hard in membership, to fraternities, to politics, to gangs, etc. This membership in the universal Body of Christ is the most important as compared to other membership.
Your Body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit:
1Co 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
1Co 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
We have to understand that as believers we are God’s habitation or dwelling place, or individually, the Holy Spirit lives in us. If you defile your body then in effect you are defiling the One that dwells you. But this doesn’t mean that you have to love your own body, no, not that way. We have to be led by Him (Gal.5:18) and we must not defile Him through this works in Gal. 5:19-21 which includes;
Adultery ,Fornication, Uncleanness, Lasciviousness, )Idolatry, Witchcraft, Hatred, Variance, Emulations, Wrath, Strife, Seditions, Heresies, Envyings, Murders, Drunkenness, Revellings and such like:
He must have dominion and control in our body (Eph.5:18), not sin (Rm.6:12;14). So, if He is the Host of your body, will you overpower or dominate Him?
Your Body is Bought by the Father:
1Co 6:19“… and ye are not your own?”
1Co 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
The church ,in general, was bought or purchased by the Father through His own blood, the blood of His Son, our Lord Jesus (Acts 20:28). Individually, He purchased us or redeemed us (Eph.1:7; 1 Pet.1:18-19). Or He paid to buy us back from the power and penalty of sin and death, from darkness to light, from Satan unto Him (Acts 26:18; Col.1:13).
Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
If He already bought us, therefore ,we do no longer have to claim ownership to this body because we are now owned by God, and no ministers or organization can put ownership upon us but God alone. In fact He stamped upon our hearts His ownership ,and that is we are sealed by His Holy Spirit (Eph.1:13-14) where no man can take or nullify.
The solution to the problem of Corinthian believers is to understand these things. This could be the problem of some you. I am not closed-minded that you become members of any organizations or religious affiliation. You can gain some advantages , but the membership in this world is only temporal and will not benefit unto eternity. What’s the use of being members with those groups if you are still bound to hell? Well, most people will not know that. Unless you take a step and look back to the wall where you confidently lean on, you will never know that it will soon collapse on you. And no matter how strong you are in holding it, you cannot keep it if it is not firmly founded in Christ and His words rightly divided. May God give you grace to understand what it is to become members of His body.
