Herod’s Hypocrisy

Isa 48:1 Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the LORD, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness.

This Christmas season, almost in most stories, plays, movies or publication, has the name Herod that never misses a slot. He is always depicted as the bad guy. Two thumbs up for that, but there’s something even beyond that as you celebrate this joyous season.

There ere three Herod mentioned in the word of God, two refers to the kings, and one referring to a tetrarch. We are talking about the king , the father of Archelaus (Mt.2:22). The name Herod bears the word HERO if letter “D”  was not added. Now let us see to find out how this letter describes his hypocrisy.

 Herod was Dissatisfied

When the news about the coming King of the Jews  was made known to him, he was dissatisfied (Mt. 2:3).  He over-reacted because a newly born cannot reign yet. But because it was a threat to his same title, and over his kingdom that covers Israel, he was troubled. This is among the sign that one is not satisfied.

Herod was Demanding

Herod gathered his resources to find out about the Christ. Not just because he is in a position so he demanded to know instantly, but because hypocrisy wants things right away (Mt.2:4).

Herod was Deceptive

Herod , after obtaining answers from his scribes and priests, inquired of the wise men privately (Mt.2:7).  Private conversations are done to secure vital information and to keep it undisclosed. No one knows that it happened. And hypocrisy are concealed, like the white-washed tomb symbolizing the Pharisees (Mt.23:27).

Herod has a Disguised Diligence

Not all diligence are to be trusted. Like Herod, he was also diligent in (Mt.2:7). But the manner and purpose of how it is done must be considered. And Herod’s diligence was a fake one.

Herod has a Doubled -Tongue

You can notice that Herod said that he desires to worship Christ (Mt.2:8). And hypocrisy only profess or pretend. If he desires to worship, he should go with them or must have sent something to signify that he values the birth of the King of the Jews. He is more familiar of the place and should have ushered the wise men for their easy search. But hypocrisy is just wordy.

Herod was Demented

Herod was mad when he found out that those wise men did not came back to give him some update about their search (Mt.2:16). His insanity was evidence by an order to kill children aging from two years old and below. And hypocrisy makes one’s actions more unreasonable.

Herod was a Destroyer

Herod only seeks Christ just to kill Him (Mt.2:13; 16). And hypocrisy doesn’t intend to build but destroys.

Herod’s Hypocrisy is dangerous. And nowadays, the world and all professing believers were even faced with such untraced hypocrisy that Herod had. Many professing and acclaimed Christian has every possible ways to know more of Christ, yet at times their possession, position, power, plans, their comfort zone makes them unavailable. The Word of God is just a page to lift or a button to press, but at times the remote control on other things are easily grabbed and pressed.

Have you asked yourself why Herod is doing all these? And what are you doing about Christ and His purpose of coming to this earth? Check it out here at Truth Seldom Heard.

Mk 8:15  And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.
