What it means to Believe in Christ? What it is we have to believe in Him? Why do I have to believe? What if I don’t?
To those outside Christendom, believing in Christ is a popular heresy or fables. But there is an even greater heresy within the so called “Christianity”. This is the reason why other religious groups could not accept our confession of faith because of many existing differences and confusions, especially concerning believing in Christ.
Before we answer those questions above, let me first tell you
What believing in Christ is not
>It is not just saying I believe Him. Even demons believe in God with trembling (Jas.2:19).
>It is not following somebody in prayer to lead you to acceptance
>It is not nodding your head or raising your hand if somebody asks you if you believe in Him.
>It is not just a confession of mouth (because those who can’t afford to speak will find themselves out of place
What it is that we have to believe in Him?
Believing in Christ is an attitude of the heart. But what are the things that you have to believe in Him? If we will look on commonly quoted John 3:16, which is written mainly to the Jews, those who believe in Him (Son of God) will not perish but will have life everlasting. And in John 6:29
Joh 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
But the gospel for our age is more clarified.
1Co 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
1Co 15:2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
1Co 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
1Co 15:4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
The gospel contains the message of His crucifixion, death, burial and resurrection. If somebody tells you to join their church in order to be saved, or if they tell you to accept and believe another personalities other than the Lord Jesus Christ, then that is another gospel (2 Co.11:4). And if somebody tells you that salvation is faith in Him plus Sabbath-keeping, or plus good works, or plus tradition, or obedience to the LAW, then it’s another gospel. You just have to believe in the work at the cross that He did for you, and it’s already finished and no addition is needed. You just have to believe what the word of God says that he died for your sins, He was buried and risen again for your justification (Rm.4:25). You have to believe Him as the Lord of your life (Rm.10:9-10).Then after you believe in your heart, show your obedience (Eph.2:10). But take note that you are not doing those things in order to be saved, or to make sure of your salvation, but because you are saved already. You are not working for it , but you are working from it. You are working out, in order for it to be manifested outside, what He has already worked inside of you (Php.2:12-13).
What if you will not believe?
It’s not a problem for me, but it will be to you. You can stay in your unbelief and the next thing that will come to you is this
2Co 4:3-4 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:2Co 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
Your unbelief will not nullify the faith of God, nor it will serve as a loss for Him (Rm.3:3-4). Someday you will face Him. What preparations do you have now? If applying for a job has preparations (you have to study from first grader until college), and if securing visa in a foreign country requires many things, then why do you think that a journey to heaven can be easily achieved? You cannot go there by your own (Jn.14:6). You cannot trust the prayers of others on your behalf when you are already dead.
But why do you have to believe?
You are a sinner (Rm.3:10, 23) and sinners will not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Co.6:9-10; Gal.5:19-21; ). A sinner is already in fire (Jude 23), in the kingdom of Satan, and in darkness (Acts 26:18). And you needed Him that’s why you have to believe Him. He is the only One Who died at the cross for you. Only by His name can a sinner be saved. He is the only Savior.
Act 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Look at verse 10 and you will see that it refers to Christ. He is your only choice. You will not choose between Christ and the devil because a sinner is already heading the direction going to hell. And your only choice left is to believe in Christ. In fact He is the best and only choice reserved for you. Will you still wait to become too late?
1Ti 1:15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
