Are you familiar with the movie “The Ten Commandments”? Are you also familiar with the Ten Commandments itself? But have you seen it for yourself in the Scriptures and compared what was handed to you by tradition?
In the Old Testament, the tables of testimony (Exo.31:18; 32:15-16) containing the ‘Ten Commandments’ was the work of God and the writings of God. But when Israel sinned by making a golden calf Moses went down from the Mount and broke the tables of testimony which the Lord made (Exo.32:19) ,yet God promised to replaced it (Exo.34:1) and asked Moses to make the same tables (Exo.34:1;4;29) .God will write the same writings on it (Deut.10:4). Can you find any difference in those set of tables, one tables was made by God (Exo.32:16) while the other was hewed by Moses(Exo.34:4)? The first one, which you might call the original of the original is not in view, but it was restored with a table made by man and God did not made it a big problem, nor an issue, for loosing the first one that He made. It’s because the content was the same. But how about when the content was changed?
A ChangeD CommandmenT
Among the factor that caused the major influence in the practice of idolatry is the brainwashing to a wrong “Ten Commandments”. This order which you can see below was followed to the one made by a priest named Augustine during the 4th century. It’s commonly read written in tablets of stone before you enter their so called “church”, fenced walls, in the walls of their building, or in the literature in schools, chapels, and at homes.
What was Written
These Commandments were also written in the following references: Exodus 20:2-17 & Deuteronomy 5:6-21.
2. “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.” V.4-6
3. “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.” V.7
4.“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.” V.8-11
5. “Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.” V.12
6. “Thou shalt not kill.” V.13
7. “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” V.14
8. “Thou shalt not steal.” V.15
9. “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.” V.16
10.“Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor‟s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass,nor any thing that is thy neighbor’s v.17
Comparing Versions of Ten Commandments
If we will compare the 10 Commandments given to us by our tradition, comparing to what was given by the Lord, we can notice that there are alterations. They removed the second command and they divided into two the tenth command. The others were also changed. After many years it became an erroneous tradition. Have you now seen the difference?
The first command is saying that because He is the true God (mentioned in Exo.20: 2) , we must not have any false God. The second one is saying that because He is the true God, He should not be worshipped in a wrong way. Because John 4:24 we can read “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” Now you know that this is a truth which is not taught to us properly but kept from our knowledge.
If a certain thing is given by the Lord, is it OK to change or diminish it? And even if you do not know the original Ten Commandments, if you are reading the scriptures and believing God for what it says, you will find many in the scriptures that idolatry is forbidden by Him.Am I your enemy because I tell you the truth(Gal.4:16)?
Who is now guilty of Corrupting the word of God?
This is what the Lord wants to His words
JER 26:2 “Thus saith the LORD; Stand in the court of the LORD’s house, and speak unto all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the LORD’s house, all the words that I command thee to speak unto them; diminish not a word:”
DEUT 4:2 “Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.”
DEUT 12:32 “What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.”
In Exodos 20:2-17; 34:28 & Deuteronomy 10:4, truly the Lord gave “10 Commandments”. But when it is distorted, diminished or altered, it will no longer appear as what the Lord wants. The worst, who is the victim? We are the victim if we will chose to deny or ignore this.If we are seeing this as among the erroneous tradition, and now that we already read from what God really say, do we still have to cling to what was handed to us ?
What is our point then?
Because the second commandment was changed and people have not seen the real 2nd command, and because the truth was hidden from their knowledge by explaining away the scripture, and because it remained erroneous for more than 500 years-then many of us was accustomed to embrace idolatry which according to God’s word is against His will.
I just want to clarify that this is only for those who believe in what the Bible says, or uses the Bible. For those who does not believe in what the word of God says, even if you have your images or idols, then this observation has nothing to do with your belief. But if you are claiming you are in Christianity and profess a belief in Christ, then the Scripture is important for you as a basis and you have to search and study it (2 Tim.2:15)..Because if not, these words Whom the Lord had spoken to unbelieving Jews can also be applicable to you.
Mar 7:7-9 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
This was my problem before. I am faithfully obeying what the church and my native faith taught me, until I observed something that needs to be decided upon. I ignored this before, but I cannot fight the truth. God wants me to know Him, not according to pagan way, but according to His words. And when I saw that those leaders have hidden something from me, and that something is what God wants me to understand, then whom shall I obey but Him alone. I know that it is by His grace that I came to understand this. May He also give you grace as you contemplate on this. (Read also: The Demetrius Mentality)
